Rock of Ages | Helen Hayes Theatre

Whoever thought that a story could be drawn out of the hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Survivor, Reo Speedwagon and other ‘80s big-haired spandex-clad rock bands was a genius.  And yes, Chris D’Arienzo, playwright of the rock musical “Rock of Ages” is a genius.

“Rock of Ages” takes place in the Sunset Strip nightclub The Bourbon Room where rock aspirant Drew, played by American Idol finalist and Tony Award nominee Constantine Maroulis, works as a busboy.  It is in this nightclub where he meets the love of his life, small town girl and aspiring actress Sheree, played by Emily Padgett, only to be separated as they both chase their dreams and hurdle over several obstacles including the egomaniac Arsenal vocalist Stacee Jaxx, played by James Capello, and the impending foreclosure of all the bars along the Sunset Strip as the street is being transformed to a wholesome commercial spot with the construction of a shopping mall.

“Rock of Ages” is perfect not only for guys who are longing to hear samples of the ‘80s rock classics like Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”, Survivor’s “The Search is Over” or Reo Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight this Feeling”, but also for girls who are a sucker for Broadway “chick-flicks” just like Drew and Sheree’s love story.  It is the perfect way to spend date night other than a movie or a casual dinner.

Come and see “Rock of Ages” with your friends or your significant other who could equally relate not only with the music but with the very big hair which is practically all over the stage and knows no gender, skin-tight and elastic attires on both groupies and rock stars, the “net-work” and the devil-may-care attitude that the strip is known for at the time, as this Tony Award nominated musical continues to play at the Helen Hayes Theatre every day except on Wednesdays.
